This I believe
Life is a short and fragile thing. I believe that I should live everyday like it is my last.
Watching graduation last night has made me realize how fast life goes by. It seems like one week ago that I was chasing girls at recess and now I am chasing girls at high school. “Life’s short” is a common phrase that is overused, stitched on pillows and used as a computer wallpaper. All it takes is a simple look into the meaning. I will put it in a more abrupt way; we could all die in thirty seven seconds. As we sit here there could be a huge explosion or I could just choke on my own spit as I’m talking and die. As I thought about this idea more I realized something. What if I really did choke on my spit and die? What are some things that I have never done, that I just missed out on because I put it off until tomorrow. If I’m extremely attracted to someone, my first feeling is fear. I don’t want to go talk to the pretty girl. Why don’t I though? What is the worst that could happen? She laughs and walks away, life goes on. I’ve realized that time goes on whether I am ready for it to or not and every second passed being scared of something is a second wasted that could have been used doing something I’ve never done before. I’ve spent to many hours sitting on my bed feeling bad for myself and thinking about why my circumstances are worse than others. I have spent to many hours sitting doing absolutely nothing. Life can come to an abrupt end at anytime and I’ve realized that every second that goes by puts me a second closer to death and I want the last thing I say to someone to be something that I mean not some stupid fight ending in a horrible insult and although this is completely against the rules of writing, I want to take the opportunity in this assignment to tell all of you that I love you, all creepiness aside, I love every single one of you, yes even you Haley. For the most part I take all of my friends for granted and life isn’t about taking things for granted it’s about seeing something and looking at it like it’s the first time you’ve ever seen it. The only way to live each day is to pretend like there is no tomorrow because there just might not be, this I believe.
Great Gatsby CH 9
1.) American Dream:”
GENERAL RESOLVES No wasting time at Shafters or [a name, indecipherable] No more smokeing or chewing Bath every other day Read one improving book or magazine per week Save $5.00 {crossed out} $3.00 per week Be better to parents
” I thought the American Dream was portrayed significantly to Gatsby’s little day planner that showed his goals. A significant part of the American Dream is independency and being able to”pull yourself up by your own bootstrap.” THis is exactly what Gatsby does. It shows his short term goals to make himself a better person and that is a very important part of the American Dream is being able to improve one’s self.
2.) Character Development: Nick grows up a tremendous amount in this chapter. He ties off all of Gatsby’s affair and is pretty much the only person ther by Gatsby’s side through his death. He fixes everything and leaves the best memory of Gatsby as possible. At the end of the chapter he moves away and moves on will his life.
3.) Color: Green is really significant in the chapter for example, “green light at the end of Daisy’s dock”, “a fresh, green breast of the new world”, and “long green tickets” Green symbolizes Gatsby’s goals throughout the book. For example, Gatsby wanted money, this was a huge goal of his and not to mention the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock for Gatsby’s biggest dream.
Great Gatsby CH 8
1.)American Dream: This chapter starts to conclude Fitzgerald’s view of the American Dream. Throughout the entire book Gatsby has a goal and a dream to get Daisy. This in itself is a huge example of the American Dream just through the pursuit of happiness. The American Dream is having a dream and trying to reach it. Myrtle dream was to be in Daisy’s shoes and eventually she was killed for trying to make this dream a reality. Gatsby’s dream was to get Daisy back and through another series of events he also eventually dies. It just shows the endurance of some people and the will power and how far someone will go to get what they want.
2.) Character Development: In this chapter Gatsby is seen as even more perserverant he doesn’t give up hope on Daisy until he dies. All the signs point to the fact that Daisy just wants to be with Tom but Gatsby just doesn’t give up hope he just keeps believing in his dream.
3.) Color: When Gatsby is on his porch wearing Pink I thought this symbolized the fact that he still loved Daisy with all his heart because of the pink relating to Daisy earlier in the book. It symbolzes Gatsby’s dream
Gatsby Ch 7
1.)American Dream: The American Dream was present in this chapter when Gatsby and Tom were fighting over Daisy in that they were both in the pursuit of happiness. Also the nobility of Gatsby waiting outside for Daisy all night even though she was working things out with Tom.
“I don’t trust him, old sport.”
“How long are you going to wait?”
“All night, if necessary. Anyhow, till they all go to bed.”
2.) Character Development: During this chapter everything is put out on the table. There are no more secrets. In this chapter we see a different side of Tom who is finally fed up with Daisy’s secretive behavior. He calls out Gatsby and ends up winning the fight in the end. Throughout the book Tom typically keeps his cool about things but during this chapter he fights for what he wants and we see a brutal side out of him.
3.)Color: The color yellow is significant in this scene. The yellow car hit Myrtle and killed her and this brought pain to Tom. Yellow can also be almost considered gold and as revealed earlier it is a sign of new wealth. The color yellow/gold may symbolize Gatsby and the destruction he brought into Tom’s life. Also while we are talking about symbolism the weather is very symbolic througout the book. For example, it is raining the day that Gatsby and Daisy reawaken their love and then it is the hottest day of the summer on the day that their love essentially starts to come to an end. I am not sure all the significance in this.
